Harley Street’s London Alzheimer’s Clinichas become the first clinic in the UK to offerTranscranial Pulse Stimulation (TPS), a revolutionarynew treatment for Alzheimer’sdementia.
TPS involves passing short and painless acoustic waves through the patient’s head tostimulate deepcerebral regions of the brainwith millimetre accuracy. These waves stimulateneural growth factors and promote the formation of new blood vessels and improve bloodcirculation.
Studies by researchers at the University of Vienna have shown that just six 30-minutetreatments over two weeks can improve mild to moderate Alzheimer’s by up to 10 points onthe CERAD scale, which measures the progression of Alzheimer’s symptoms.
Patients and close relatives who received the treatment through the study reportednoticeable improvementsin memory and verbal communication, which subsequently andindirectly led to increased social interaction. Some patients further reported an improvedsense of direction that enabled them to do their daily tasks independently and safely findtheir way home afterwards.
Lead researcher Dr Roland Beisteiner says: ‘For the first time in the world, TPS enables us to penetrate all areas of the brain by means of an ultrasound pulse delivered directly to the skull in a non-invasive, painlessprocedure, during which the patient is fully conscious, and specifically target particularareas of the brainand stimulate them.’
The procedure is painless, non-invasive, involves minimal side effects, and does not require medications. If the patient usesAlzheimer’s medicationssuch as acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, the TPS treatment does not interfere with the medication’s effectiveness. 1500 treatments have already been carried out across Europe, and now patients in the UK will have access to it for the first time.
